It's been awhile since we've updated our blog; partly because of the speed of life as well as discovering the joy of Facebook and more recently Twitter. One of the benefits that this blog site offers that others may not is the opportunity to create a simple, personal journal of sorts. All that being said, here's a quick entry about what's been going on with Makalani photography.

As you know, I belong to Women in Focus here in Atlanta, Ga which affords its' members the opportunity to participate in various photography exhibits. The most recent exhibit is titled, 'Dear World' and was held in conjunction with Sistagraphy (another Atlanta-based photography club) and more importantly highlighted 'Girls, Inc.' Members from both clubs accompanied girls from Girls, Inc. on two photography field trips; Chattahoochee Nature Center and Little Five Points. Unfortunately I wasn't able to participate in either due to previous commitments, but am going to make a point to mark my calendar well in advance for the upcoming field trips.

The pieces that I entered in the exhibit were very literal interpretations the theme Dear World and I actually look forward to continuing that theme in the future.

During the first reception on March 2nd, Robert, Chelle and I took a closer look at the girl's photography, as well as read the accompanying narratives. I was inspired and felt a new sense of hope for the future as I got a glimpse into their fresh, young, confident minds. The show runs from March 2nd to March 27th at the Central Library, and you'll have an opportunity to meet the girls in person at the second reception Saturday, March 14th from 2pm to 4pm.

I mentioned that I have begun to spend time on the virtual world of Twitter, where I met Hugh of ZaZa Gallery. They have, by far the BEST prices I've ever see for canvas prints. $25 for an 8x10, $49 for a 16x20 and $99 for a 20x30! I am ordering the 8x10 today and will make sure to report back to you on the final product once I receive it. I am still trying to figure out what photo I want to have done....

Where did 2008 go?

In a fleeting moment, 2008 was gone. As with it's predecessors, 2008 brought many happy moments as well as a wave of sadness.

Kapena, dear brother, son, uncle and friend, left us this past April for the ultimate paradise. We will always cherish your memory Kapena.

Robert & I are proud to let you know that there are two graduates in the family during 2008:

Becca graduated from high school in May and has gone on to the University of Wisconsin Eauclair to pursue her degree.
Chelle graduated from the University of Wisconsin Eauclair this past December with a degree in Marketing. We are also excited to have her join us here in Atlanta during her job search.

We would also like to announce that there is a new member of the family that joined us early in the year.

Her name is Leilani, perhaps you've already read about her. Robert & I rescued her from a local thrift shop and she has been quite the traveler/partier since then. Noe felt that she needed company and sent her a 'mail-order' boyfriend, Kimo. Well, don't you all know that they work really quick as many of you have already received one of their offspring this past Christmas. Don't worry - we'll keep an eye on them....

As most of you know, our motto is 'Work Hard, Play Hard' and this year was no different. If it seems as if we crammed alot in this past year, also know that we worked like crazy. Or maybe it was Robert who did...... We have both been with our employers for over 20 years (Thank you employers!), therefore have quite a bit of vacation time. So, here's a brief snapshot of our vacations - hope I didn't miss any.

March brought Mary from South America through Atlanta on her way to back to Alaska. She has already done more than most of us will do in a lifetime. What a wonderful sense of adventure she has! Dad came down from Nashville to visit with her, as he does each fall and spring. This year, Uncle Ron and Aunt Judith also joined us on their way down to Florida (or was it back from???) It was fabulous to catch up with everyone.
The end of May found us in Appleton/Neenah, Wisconsin for Becca's high school graduation. Where does the time go? Kawika met us there (he's a regular frequent flyer now) and was greeted by Brayden saying, 'Uncle Veeka'! We had a great time hanging out at Jessie & Sky's house, especially at their Driveway Party and their new Basement Bar. We visited and toured the Lienenkugel's Brewery with Jess, Michelle, Becca & Kawika. Who can forget Robert's famous line when the tour guide asked, "So where are you guys from?" to which Robert replied, "Hawaii". Oh really, the tour guide says, "What brought you here?" You can probably guess what Robert said, but I'll humor you anyway - "an airplane." Said tour guide indicated that he would tell the jokes! Ha! We also checked out the annual 'Cheese Fest' and had a combined birthday party for Brayden & Kawika, which was alot of fun! Becca's graduation was great and we made noise with bells, an air horn and hoot n' hollars even though we had been advised otherwise....... Her party was a blast too! Lots of food, friends, music and games. We had so much fun!
July - Sara, Ken & Eyore came to visit for a weekend. We hung out at the house, went to dinner at the Bistro and listened to Premonition perform. Great relaxing weekend.
End of August - so I'm at work and Robert calls me to say that he is off Saturday, Sunday and Monday and wants to drive to Kansas City to see Kawika play soccer on Sunday. Yahoo!!!! Roadtrip! Kawika scored the only goal of the game! We also visited the infamous 18th & Vine, and were fortunate enough to catch a performance by the McFadden Brothers. Their performance is the kind of stuff referenced in the song Kansas City. And to top the weekend off, we hung out with Chris and Kawika all day and ended with a authentic KC BBQ dinner. It doesn't get any better than that!
I had the opportunity to visit Orlando twice this year! August with Angela & the boys, then December with Mike, Angela, Nathan & Elijah. August found us at Wet n' Wild, while both trips had exciting trips to Chuckie Cheese! It is so wonderful just to spend quality time with the kids. Christmas was especially memorable this year since Mike is home.
Thanksgiving was a Family Reunion time for us here in Hotlanta. Kawika, Angela & the boys, Jess & Sky and Chris & Tommy, AND let's not forget Dexter - joined us for a week full of family fun. We had a big pre-holiday party for our friends at which Nathan welcomed everyone by saying, "Welcome to our Snowman party, we're glad you came." The snowman part was his personal touch! We had a great time at Bass Pro in their little Christmas Wonderland, and then at the rock climbing wall watching Chris, Tommy & Kawika give it a try. Nathan, Elijah, Kawika & the boys next door all watched in amazament as Dexter performed tricks under Chris's watchful eye. We had a fun afternoon at the Marietta Square eating pizza and playing tag in the park. Thanksgiving was wonderful as we all shared our thankfulness for family with each other. The week ended too soon, but we were already making plans for the next event.

Robert & Sheri have the decorating BUG!!!!

We were sitting in the basement after returning from Wisconsin this past June, and looked around at the bland wall color and furniture arrangement. We thought about how much we really liked the decor at HuHot, a restaurant we visited on our last day there and decided that we would paint the room. An hour later, we were at The Home Depot buying Behr paint, drop cloths, brushes, etc. One week later - we were done!
I went to the fabric store with my friend Denice as she was planning to reupholster two of her grandmother's chairs. I found a fabric that I like, cut a sample and went back to buy it about a week later with my friend Cheryl in tow. My plan was to reupholster a chair in the small bedroom and use the remainder to make a couple of pillows. I was so inspired by the colors of the fabric that I bought paint in complementary colors and painted the room. The fabric wound up being a comforter and sham. Fun, fun, fun..... I think one of the best things I like about this room is the letters on the wall that spell, imagine.
Fast forward to December, with Robert getting the bug to change the garage around a little. He was tired of the gold and silver lame' that we had hung to hide the storage area when we have parties, as well as the fifties record tablecloths that covered the bare stud walls..... Neither one of us know what exactly inspired us to completely redo the garage, but before you knew it - we were well on our way! An 'Endless Summer' poster was the color inspiration. Ceilings in light blue, walls in teal, light yellow and brown and the floor covered with outdoor grass carpeting. The windows are covered with curtains made from Robert's old Aloha shirts. The bar is the old pulpit (purchased from an antique store a couple of years ago), with the top removed and a new bar platform added. It is covered in Hawaiin honu (turtle) fabric that Jessie gave to us many years ago and enclosed in a clear resin coat. Add bamboo furniture secured from local antique and thrift shops and a custom sign and you've got 'Leilani's Aloha Lounge'! We've got a sound system, free WiFi and cable TV on the wall. If we don't answer the front door, just knock on the garage door as that's where we'll be!

Mike comes home to be with his beautiful wife Angela and his sons, Nathan & Elijah!

Larry Savage (of Totally Savage) and Kari Conolly (of The Barry Richmond Band) are wed on a perfect October 4th in a fabulous backyard ceremony!

Premonition plays the Grandies (Hyatt Employee Appreciation Event), the Sun Valley Festival and Shopping with a Hero, in addition to many gigs at local establishments.

Chris & Tommy move from the windy city and purchase their first home/loft in Pittburgh!

A tornado hits downtown Atlanta in early March....

Tony Stewart leaves Gibbs Racing to be a co-owner of his own team, and make one last stop at the corporate THD offices to show his appreciation. Joey Logano signs with Joe Gibbs Racing!

Gladiolas & Aloha Shirts

It's been awhile since we've updated our blog, so here goes! Just a few random snippits from the edges of our world....

Gladiolas - As I ventured through Publix, one of our favorite groceries - with the exception of Harry's of course, gathering fixin's for that evening's meal of pasta, fresh mozarella, french bread and Ruffino Chianti, I spied them. There they were next to the prim and proper roses; tall-stemmed, free spirited gladiolas with the gentlest of peach hues that beckoned me. In a fleeting moment, the memories of the front yard with Mom planting her gladiolas came rushing back causing a smile as I placed them in the cart for the beginning of their journey home to our kitchen table.
Aloha shirts - I am constantly on the lookout everywhere I go for the elusive silky aloha shirt for my dear Kenui; Robert as most of you know him by. It is always quite a catch to find those that are adorned with gorgeous hula girls, but alas they seem to be few and far between. Word of warning is to always steer clear of the cotton tourist print, you've seen them - red or blue flowers ..... sure sign that you've visited one of the major tourist attractions in Hawaii and bought the family matching shirts! I just took a look at some of his favorites; Carribean Blues, Banana Cabana, Paradise Found, Ocean Currents, Pineapple Connection, Ocean Pacific and Holo Holo are some of the great & imaginative labels these shirts are manufactured under.
Peachtree Camera Repair Shop - is one of the best you will ever come across! For those of you who use digital SLR cameras, you know how important a 'clean' camera is. These are the folks that do warranty work for Wolfe Camera and other major retailers nationwide, and boy do they have a deal on cleanings! You can buy a card for $150 and get six cleanings per year! That is an amazing 50% off and I tell you that I just could not pass it up.
Across the Universe - as seen on our new Blue Ray Disc player the other night was simply amazing! For those who may not be familiar with this movie, it is a must see for anyone growing up in the 60's. A Beatles inspired movie in which the writers and producers built a story around the Beatles songs and historical events of the 60's. Robert & I laughed, gasped many 'wows' and cried (or was that just me?) as we watched this incredible movie/musical on the crystal clear big screen. Note of interest: believe it or not, I stayed awake through the entire movie - proof positive it is phenomenal!
Willie Rae's - it's been entirely too long since we ate there, so we decided to drop by the other evening. Mike greeted us with hugs and handshakes (you guess who;-0) and sat us at our favorite table at the window. We started off with Ahi Tuna Poke, a Corona and a top shelf Margarita (El Eduardo) while Robert pondered over the menu. It doesn't take me long at all to figure out what I want, as I always order the fish taco dinner. Robert chose the pork chop special which he couldn't quit talking about. (and you know that's something coming from the Chef himself...)
Digital Arts Studio - is one of the venues hosting a show for the Women in Focus club I belong to. I dropped off two pieces that will be displayed amongst all of the other fabulous photographer's work from October 4th to 31st. By the way.... my good friend Denice actually has one of her photographs on the advertisement postcard for this event! Way to go girl!
Forsythe Fabrics - This place is addicting...... If you have never been there, just remember that I told you so! I found some fabulous fabric that I will be using to cover two chairs in the small 'antique' bedroom of our house. Along with this, my favorite Behr paint will be applied to the walls to give the room an updated 'funky' look. Leapfrog on three walls and peacock on one. Can't wait for you to see it the next time you're here.

There's so much more going on, but I really need to get to The Home Depot to pick up the paint for the bedroom and get started on that project! Until the next time..... Aloha!

Reason #58 Why I Love The Marietta Square

If you live or drive anywhere near the Marietta Square, you may have had the opportunity to check out the 'Art in the Park' event this past weekend. If you aren't so fortunate - I'll share the highlights with you. (Or at least the ones that I think are highlights!)

Cheryl & I took a tour of this juried art show (I promise there is NO junk being sold here!) and had brunch at Shillings. I also checked out a few of my favorite Shops on the Square; Alchemy (fabulous proprietor Laura & great one of a kind jewelry), Go Fish, Doodlebugz, Kings Row Antiques (Susie & Greg will make you feel welcome!), L Michelle, Status and Cinnamon & Sage.

These turtles (honu) are from Rocwood Studios, whose home is right here in the ATL. We got the three small ones, and their home is on our back porch Margaritaville!

As if this wasn't enough fun, Robert & I ate at the Marietta Pizza Company, then went to visit our friends, Loose Change who were playing at Doc's in Smyrna.

Fast forward to tomorrow, and you'll find us at the Marietta Square once more for First Friday Art Walk taking in the smooth jazz sounds of the Greg Mauldin Trio at Kings Row Antiques, and visiting all of our favorite shops listed above.

Again, if you are fortunate enough to live or visit this area - Marietta Square is a must! From the great shops, eclectic events, the Strand Theatre rennovation, the eateries, Marietta Wine Market, Scaryetta Ghost Tour - there's something for everyone. Come on down, visit Robert & me and check out the locals at the Marietta Square!

The pressure was on as this U12 team played its' first game of the season on a new, larger field against the U 13 team, KC Rangers. Both Robert & I have lots of vacation time to use in a short period of time. That being said, he had four, yes four days off this week! So I decided to request a vacation day as well, and we spent Thursday just hangin' out together.

Here's a quick (or maybe not so quick) run down of our rainy, rainy day.....

Sleep in late - I don't think we even opened our eyes until 8am!
Go to Howards for lunch and get a hamburger steak (??) smothered in grilled onions & mushrooms, with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy. Pair this with a cup of coffee and the rain coming down - a great way to spend part of our afternoon. We marveled at the basket of saltines and whipped spread (not butter mind you..) and thought of how retro that and the atmosphere here were. A movie seemed like a great idea, so Robert let me choose (I'll tell you later).
Gone junkin' to pass the time until the movie started - Goodwill was good for a couple of retro Dairy Queen Santa drinking glasses. Then it was on to the Smyrna Thrift Shop were we hit the jackpot! Four aloha shirts, six albums (Bernstein - Brubeck, All in the Family Soundtrack, New Riders, Frank Zappa, Cat Stevens & CCR) and one retro warming plate were in our basket as we approached the checkout....... And there she was - we both looked at each other with disbelief in our eyes...... All alone on the shelf was Leilani. We knew right then and there that she had to come home with us. It is almost unfathomable that someone could do that to her, but she'll not have to worry about that anymore.

What Happens in Vegas doesn't get rave reviews, but it's one of those over the top stupid movies that will have you laughing (and if you're me - crying....) I don't think that Robert thought it was that good, but it's OK to have differing opinions. Maybe the reason that I do like it is that it is mindless. A great escape from every day life.
Hang out at the house for a bit - when who should call but Larry. Come on over for an impromptu .....
Jam at Carrie & Larry's - with some of our good friends. Carrie's homemade salsa and Larry's fajitas were the perfect touch to the evening. Oh yes, let's not forget that Leilani also joined us and played her first jam ever!

It still rained on and off all day long, but that didn't stop us from making the most of our day together.

Margaritaville!

so...... last weekend, Robert & I spent Sunday getting Margaritaville ready for YOU! (Oops, that sounds like we desparately want company..... wait - we DO!)

You saw our fabulous chairs (previous post below), and I must confess that the bug has bit me but good. I am hopelessly drawn to junk that can be painted or modified in some kewl way to fit into our veraown Margaritaville.

Sooo.... yesterday, while sitting at the outside cafe' Kiosco sipping on a fabulous glass of red sangria - I run into a friend whom I haven't seen in awhile and she twists my arm (not really necessary) into goin junkin'! Hmmm.... I've already been to Alchemy and got a great pair of orange dangly earrings, got a fabulous haircut that morning at Hair by the Square, and a little beverage - of course I'll go.

(this is the very glass of sangria I told you about!)

Goodwill first stop - found a 60's chartruese vanity stool just perfect the way it is for $4! (did I mention that I simply love a bargain?)

Then, we venture over to A Classy Flea where lo and behold, I saw her! It's like destiny or karma hit that very moment! Sitting right out front and beckoning 'buy me, buy ME! was this parrot, whom we later named Pearl. Check her out below for a unbelievable transformation!

But wait! Do you love to talk as much as I do? Well, here's a blast from the past - a Gossip Bench! You'll have to check back later for an update of what the final product looks like. It very well may wind up in the Beatles room......

What's goin' on.....

When I wrote the title of this blog entry, my mind automatically went to Marvin Gaye's song. Such poignant lyrics are embodied in this timeless classic.

So, what's going on with us? Same kind of stuff as you'll usually find us doing... Hanging out at the Marietta Square, checkin' out the local eats and our favorite music.

There's so much going on at the Square, it's hard to keep up - but we give it our best shot! First, let me reiterate how passionate Robert & I are about supporting our local businesses. Whether you're going out for a great cup of coffee in the morning, dinner,or to enjoy one of the many events - I promise you it will be a memorable time.

This past Friday, Robert & I rushed over to the Square as soon as I got home from work to check out the Church Street Block Party. Now, let me tell you something... these merchants really know how to put on a party! Hor'duerves and beverages combined with great conversation and fabulous goods are my idea of a good time. Being that it was late, we were only able to visit our two favorite shops.... Alchemy and King's Row Antiques. Robert hung out with Barry for awhile before indulging me in a fabulous necklace and earring set from Alchemy. (Thank you Darlin') He & Laura (proprietor) have a conspiracy going to make sure that I get the jewelry I like - which I am all for! Then, we mosied (is that really a word?) on over to King's Row and chatted for a long bit with Greg and Susie, before getting a couple of special little gifts (not saying who, but it could be you!) for some friends and relatives. Robert is still talking about how we can fit this bar into our dining room. (who needs a table and chairs?!)

We ate at La Parilla (right on the loop) after our fabulous shopping experience, where the food is good and the staff is downright friendly. I asked our lovely waitress Teresa to ask the manager how much he wants for the six foot blow-up Corona bottle. She assured me that if we come back on Cinco de Mayo that they will GIVE it to us! So, I asked her again, "es verdad?" and she said, "yes, it's the truth!" You now know where Robert & I will be dining on Cinco de Mayo!

We are constantly working on our 'Margaritaville' and I am happy to announce the addition of some new pieces! (whew, our life is really exciting, huh????) Anyhow, I was 'junkin' the other day at our local Goodwill and found four, yes four old wooden barstools. As you can tell by the pix below, they are red and oh so so.... You'll also notice a natural colored footstool that I 'rescued' from the roadside in honor of Earth Day! (sounds like a responsible reason, right?)

A couple of cans of spray paint (from The Home Depot, of course!) later and look what we've got! These stools will be fitting for our back porch or where ever they may land. I'm still thinking about and searching for kewl quotes to paint on them. (Feel free to send us any brilliant ideas you may have!)

So, I'll bet those of you who have never been to our place are wondering what the heck is going on in this 'room'! It's the garage with decorations still up from the Holiday Stress Relief Jam! So, now you know....... Whew!

Yesterday, I hung out with one of my dear friends Donna for the afternoon. We had a delicious lunch at the Marietta Diner , then headed over to the Open House at the Artisan's Resource Center. Now, I have lived in Marietta for about six years now and never knew about this place! I saw a mention on the Fox 5 Good Morning Atlanta show and decided it was a must see. Here's my favorites:

They offer classes, so I am seriously considering the metal sculpture class by Sculpture with an Edge or metal jewelry making with Dana of Dana Ruth Designs..... Decisions.....

OK - now on to something I need y'all to pay close attention to! An upcoming benefit on April 26th from 10am until 6pm - featuring six bands, including our very own Premonition!

The West Cobb Business Association is looking to make this their signature fundraising event, with the proceeds going to benefit the children of West Cobb by providing college scholarships. This is a family friendly event with no alcohol sold - bring the kids on out!

All of this is happening on Saturday, April 26, from 10am-6pm at Sun Valley Beach. There will be 6 bands on 2 stages featuring musical genres of classic rock, blues, jazz and oldies rock music. Besides Premonition, there are two other bands that have listings on Atlanta Blues Society. Totally Savage, and Roger Shepard who is playing with Shuffle Junkies. Of course, Barry Richman, who is Master of Ceremonies.

Besides the music, there will be festivities for the whole family. These include outdoor sports such as horseshoes, volleyball and laser tag as well as jumpies and other inflatable for the younger kids. Speaking of kids, there will be a kids area that will allow children to color and paint at their own kids pavilion. We will have a separate food pavilion with other types of live music separate from the main stage.

What about the food?! There will be food vendors of all sorts - from fair fare (little play on words, huh?) such as popcorn, pretzels, funnel cakes, sno-cones, cotton candy to real rib stickin' food like burgers, hotdogs, BBQ and Jamaican food. Yumo as Rachel would say!

The festival will host numerous vendors displaying Arts and Crafts while others will display their services or products. It is rumored that there will be many price giveaways and numerous raffles throughout the day.

Oh and by the way.... the weather forecast is 70's, partly cloudy with only a 10% chance of rain! Bring your sunscreen and get ready for a good time!

OK - and if you're still up to it.... Sunday is Taste of Marietta. This year promises to be the biggest and best ever! The festival area has been expanded to include all sides of the Historic Marietta Square. It's Monday night, and more importantly NOT a school night for Robert (aka he doesn't have to work tomorrow), sooooo..... here we are at Barnacles Sports Bar in Marietta, right near the Walmart! (isn't everything near a Walmart or Waffle House here in Georgia?)

So... I just had to check in to let you know that we are watching the NCAA Championships with a bunch of really loud people with over 100 TVs surrounding us! Yikes! For those of you who know Robert, he is in heaven right now, with the only thing being any better than this would be Nascar. (please scroll down to previous posts...)

I am rooting for Kansas (ahem who BTW is winning right now!), but Robert thinks that Memphis will win. Time and three more quarters will tell. So let's talk about the cuisine here. The prime rib is much better than expected, the cheese sticks are as greasy as expected and the Patron shots are just right! What's the special of the day you ask? This great Sam Adams glass with the purchase of a draft of ... you guess it! Sam Adams! I think we'll order another just for the kewl glass.

Hmmm..... what else can I tell you about this place???? Our waitress may have never been inside of a bar until today, but is really sweet. The hostess has an attitude, along with the big sigh when she finally concedes to show you to your seat. (Really, it wasn't just us - she's an equal opportunity when it comes to giving an attitude.)

All in all, this is a good place as sports bars go. We'll be back again - but absolutely NOT on Tuesday evening as it is the ever dreaded K-A-R-A-O-K-E! Oh wait! Tuesday's special is $5 shots of Patron.... Hmmmm - so if we were playing rock-paper-scissors, Patron would beat Karaoke.... You never know, we may be back on Tuesdays afterall.

During the course of each of our lives, we will make friends that are true blue and will stick with us through thick and thin. As Robert recounted his experiences of the last few days, I realize that Ernie, his wife Esperanza and new precious baby girl, and Steph and her two wonderful daughters, Brianna & Alyssia (only one pictured here) were truly a part of Kapena's extended family.

We are ever so grateful that they were there for him, and how wonderful for Robert to hear their warm and funny memories of our dear Kapena.

One of the perks that HD associates have is being able to participate in a Gibbs Race Team event at our very own Store Support Center here in Atlanta. The only thing missing was Robert as he had to work. I did manage to get one of his die cast cars autographed by Tony Stewart and Greg Zipadelli, as well as a photo autographed by every one of the Pit Crew.

The original intent was to tell you about a few of the places on our Hot List, but something unexpected came up, or should I say out? Can you believe that this fish was in the backyard lake? And that's no fish tale! Here's the best part....Robert threw it back in for YOU to catch!

So as I was saying, our Hot List - tried and true, or kewl and new - here are some of them. Before we start, you may notice that many of these are in our very own Marietta Square - and that is not a mistake. Both of us firmly believe in supporting local business by frequenting them, in addition to spreading the word to our friends and family.

Alchemy - all time favorite shop on the Marietta Square. Laura has a keen eye for fashion which is reflected in her wide selection of jewelry. This isn't your mass produced gold and diamond stuff that you'll find on every corner at your local mall. It is eclectic, one of a kind in many instances, direct from the designer jewelry. Laura is one of the friendliest people that we have ever met, and we are lucky to call her our friend. Robert especially likes the fact that she offers a 'Wish List' service that allows him to never go wrong at any given holiday. She's also got a complete line of greeting cards, and other giftables so this is truly a one-stop-shop for you gentlemen! If you decide to stop by, let her know that Sheri & Robert sent you!
Hair by the Square - Deborah, owner and stylist, at Hair by the Square is an expert in her field. She has a fabulous ability to listen to her customers and give them exactly what they are looking for. I get many compliments on my hair and always send them straight to Deborah! And if you are looking for Aquage products, she is one of the few in the Atlanta area that carries a full line.
Willie Rae's - Our original favorite on the square, this funky, artsy atmosphere boasts fabulous cuisine, of which our very favorite is fish tacos. The staff is great, especially Michael - our favorite waiter, that always has a hug for me whenever we visit. This is truly a must visit establishment next time you are in town!
L.Michelle - This botique brings you the latest fashions found in some of the hippest magazines around, in addition to Oprah's favorites! My favorite thing at this shop is the shoes! OMG! You cannot find cuter shoes for better price anywhere! I promise! I just got two pairs of great shoes on sale (60% off) for $36 total! The next time you see my houndtooth pumps, you'll know just where I got them.
Doodlebugs - This shop could be described as groovy, hip and chic! They carry one of my favorite product lines, Quotable - which makes perfect gifts for just about anyone on your list. You'll find everything from baby gifts, to Webkinz, to college paraphelia, to gifts for your honey, Momma or best girlfriend! Oh, and they also have my favorite newpaper publication skirt!
La Famiglia Ristorante - authentic Italian cuisine with a cozy atmosphere! The menu has funny 'stuff' written by the proprieters themselves, the house Chianti is marvelous and the food, yummy!
Church St. Station - this re-purposed 'filling station' catches everyone's eye as they drive down Church St with the whimsical lawn art adorning the front of the building. They carry a couple of great lines of jelly and BBQ sauces that are simply delicious! Our very favorite is the jalepeno pepper jelly. Pair this with Wheat Thins and cream cheese - divine! This one flies off the shelf quickly - so it's always worth a check in to see if they've got it in stock. There are great wood working pieces, paintings and country arts, but the most interesting to me is the potography by Alan Casey. My friend Donna & I had a chance to meet him the other day, and learned that he is a purist, using only film cameras, unless of course anyone would like to buy a new digital camera outfit for him;-). The thing that makes this special is that his photographs are un-retouched. Wow!
Harry's - also known as Whole Foods, is a virtual paradise for Robert as he peruses the aisles for inspiration. It is great to watch the excitement in his eyes as he finds the perfect ingredients to whip up a fantastic meal for two, or fifty.

Some of our newest favorites - just discovered (by us that is...) are

Kiosco - One of our friends John recommended this restaurant and we sure are glad that he did. The Columbian cuisine is authentic, and muy sabroso! Naturally with Robert being a chef we sample appetizers, entree, sangria and desert, all of which were delicious! It was so good that my friend Denice and I went there a couple of weekends ago for lunch. This definitely goes on our list of restaurants to frequent on a regular basis. (less cooking for me!)
Three Bears Cafe - Laura was right! She told both of us to check this one out, as there is a suprise in the back and boy was she spot on! From the front it looks like just another cafe on the square, but wait until you venture inside. There is a full 'club' complete with a second HUGE bar, stage, dance floor and balcony with additional booths and seating. We had dinner there the night before Valentine's Day as Robert would be working long hours the next day. The menu has healthy choices, with no beef, pork or fried foods served. How do they do it?! I don't know, but the food is wonderful and very flavorful. Ahem, and don't you know we had appetizers, entree, drinks and desert. Roll me on out with a smile on my face knowing that everything, well except maybe the tequilla, was good for me. On second thought - it was Patron - that's good for me, right?! My friend Donna & I went there for lunch yesterday, and it was truly yummy. Then last night we dropped by to check out the 'night life' and it is very kewl! We will be back and this may indeed be one of our new favorite watering holes since Crystal's isn't open anymore.
King's Row Antiques & Gifts - How many times have I walked past this shop? I'm embarassed to think how many, but grateful that I finally 'saw the light'! With the shop owners Susie and Greg making everyone who comes through the door feel right at home, how could you help but to love this place? With everything from elegant antiques & tole painting to great gift items, I am hooked. A full line of nightlights, magnets and dry erase boards is available with paintings by famous artists- one of my favorite being Michael Goddard. Another must have for all of your wonderful sisters out there, are the magnets, cards and notepads by Curly Girl Design. They will hit a chord on the harp you call life, and make you chuckle too! The one other line that I want you to check out is the fusion art glass by Peggy Karr. I think you're gonna love this place!
Go Fish on the Square - Not in the fountain silly! While there aren't any big bass like Robert's above, there are lots of great catches, ahem... finds. The owner of this small chain of shops was visiting Peru several years ago and was taken by the beautiful and unique goods that were being hand-made by indigenous people of that area. The rest is history - a fabulous retailer selling unique clothing jewelry and accessories that benefits not only our very own Marietta Square, but those talented third world artisans - who just need a helping hand.

Whew! That's alot of favorites, huh? We have more such as Guitar Center, Sam Ash, Bass Pro, Best Buy, Home Depot, Anne Taylor Loft, Wolfe Camera, Borders, Costco, Scalini's, Orient Express, Marietta Diner - but alas don't have time to tell you all about them now.

So, if you're in Atlanta or Marietta - check out these local business and I promise you will be glad that you did!

The other day, I woke to the sounds of Silent Night quietly playing on the radio in the living room and thought to myself how blessed Robert and I are. We have a wonderful family, whom we are very proud of, great friends and each other.

We spent Saturday finishing up our Christmas shopping, then Sunday at Bobby & Cheryl's Second Annual Christmas Open House where the food was fabulous - and our friends company & music were magical!

Christmas Eve found us sleeping in, then having lunch at a cafe on the Marietta Square and onto the movie theatre to see National Treasure. (good movie!) Later, we ordered pizza and opened a couple of presents. I have to tell you that I think Robert's favorite is the indoor remote control helicoptor from Chris & Tommy! It is pretty darn kewl!

Christmas day brings many phone calls to and from family, all of which we wish we could be with on this magical day. After Robert fixed a fabulous breakfast accompanied by none other than Kona coffee, we proceeded to open the remainder of our gifts. My favorite is a three way tie between the martini set in a case from Chris & Tommy, a fabulous jewelry set from Robert (Alchemy) and the Annie Leibowitz book from Denice.

We took to the movie theatre again to see I am Legend (Robert liked alot, but a little too intense for me) and Walk Hard (simply hilarious spoof on various artists career and bio-movies).

It's been a great mini-vacation, and tomorrow it's back to work for both of us - rested and ready for whatever the New Year brings!

spend a Saturday afternoon than with Angela and the boys at a church festival. Perfectly sunny, blue skies, sprinkled with american flags billowing in the light breeze at the local country church. Gospel melodies drifting through the air to the accompianment of none other than Brother Jeff playing the guitar, whilst others play the fiddle and bass. Face painting and color hair sprays adorn both the young and young at heart, some of who also join in the cake walk. Snow cones, dunking booths, carnival games and door prizes all can be had for the price of a couple tickets. I can't remember the last time I had so much fun! When it was all over - we stopped by the local store and I had trouble figuring out why some folks were staring at us. Could it be that we glowed in the aftermath of so much fun - or was it Nathan's painted on Batman mask and my orange hair that gave it away? We'll probably never know, and better yet - not even care!

For those of you who know us well, it goes without saying that we had to check out the scene at Buddy Guy's Legends while we were in Chicago. As luck would have it, it was Open Jam night. There were many talented musicians, and Robert decided to go for it and put his name on the list. He was fortunate enough to play the last two sets of the night before the house band returned to stage to close it down. (SPECIAL NOTE: The food was great too!)

A special treat for us was to hear for the first time ever, a fabulous singer Holle Thee Maxwell. It was such a pleasure to listen to her sing the blues, as well as entertain the capacity crowd. Check out her website and order the CD if you get a chance, I promise you'll enjoy it!

What a Weekend!

This weekend was originally intended to be a relaxing one - to wind down from 13 days on the road, but there were other things in store for us......

Saturday we unpacked the furniture and various assundry items of my Mother's that we brought back from Indiana. The second guest room is finished and looks fantastic! The living room has yet another piece that brings the Bogart theme to life. We can't wait for you all to come to see us, and check out the new additions to our decor.

Robert played with his band Premonition last night, so Kawika and I decided that we would go to the movies. I went online and the theatre was showing the movie Ratatouie - so I purchased the tickets and we went on our merry way. Once we arrived and the kiosk couldn't find my tickets, I realized that we were at the WRONG theatre! Yikes, time was short and they just happened to be showing Transformers (which was not at the original location). The movie was fantastic! I recognized names such as Optimus Prime and Megatron from days when Michael was ten years old like Kawika! So even though things did not go as I planned - it turned out better!

So here we are, it is Sunday and Kawika is supposed to fly home today. The guys manage to get some fishing in before it is time to pack and head to the airport. No fish today, but I happened upon a couple of great butterflies in the back yard.

We head to the airport and were fortunate enough to get passes for both Robert and I to accompany Kawika to the gate. To pass the time until Kawika's flight, we decided to hang out at 'Victory Lane' on Concourse C and watch the Nascar Brickyard Race. Seating was non-existent, but we got lucky when a gentleman motioned to us to take his table as he was leaving. And who do you thing was sitting at the table next to ours? Another Tony Stewart fan, and to top it off she has Nascar TrackPass on her laptop. She gave us a thumbs up as soon as she saw Robert's Tony shirt, and she & the guys talked Nascar until the conclusion of the race. And do I have to tell you? TONY STEWART WON!!!!!

Did I mention that it is raining today? So bad that the 5:30 flight was post-poned to 7:20, then 9:00, and finally cancelled. Kawika's bag was already being transferred to the very next available flight, so retrieving it for the evening was not an option. We left the airport four hours after we arrived, and stopped by Walmart on the way home for a shirt for Kawika to wear tomorrow. He had fun picking one out that says, "I'm easily distracted - by food and video games." It rivals the one he has on today, that he also picked out, that says, "I didn't do my homework because."

And so the evening is almost coming to an end, with Kawika watching the movie Taladega Nights (Nascar spoof) on TV, Robert playing with his amp, and me organizing photos. Once again, today did not turn out as originally planned, but all is well at the Pope household.

Wonder what adventures tomorrow will bring?

Where to start? Robert, Kawika and I have been on the road for 13 days now and are now officially back in the South. One last night in a hotel, and soon we will be sleeping in our own comfy beds.

We have had a vast array of great experiences, from reconnecting with old friends, spending time with family, discovering skate parks in every city, going to the ball game, fishing, swimming, playing at an open jam, gymnastics and swim lessons, and finally soccer games. Tomorrow we'll spend a few hours with Dad in Nashville before returning to Atlanta, where Robert is playing this weekend with Premonition.

We'll catch you up a day at a time. As you may have already guessed - the entire trip was documented with pictures!

I went to see the Annie Leibowitz collection on display at the High Museum with my friend Denice on Saturday. It was awesome!

Robert & I are planning our 'Spontaneous Summer Vacation' and I made a spread sheet complete with travel agenda and accomodations. I highlighted the cells with no activities and told him that 'yellow denotes opportunities for spontaneous activities'! We have lots of yellow cells on the spreadsheet, so contact us if you know we are coming your way and have something in mind!

I am going to see the grandkids tomorrow! We'll take lots of pictures, play in the park, eat too much ice cream, swim and other fun summer stuff.....

March Madness at the Pope's in Atlanta is a once in a lifetime experience for us, as well as all who come into contact with our family. Friday & Saturday brought arrivals from Chicago, Kansas City, Hawaii, Wisconsin and Orlando. We're all here now, and just hanging out.

For many of our group of 17, this was the first time they met as we brought Sheri's and Robert's family together.

Sunday began with breakfast with Kenui (Robert as you may know him), a photo-shoot at Portrait Innovations, then on to La Hacienda for Premonition's Friends and Family concert. A special treat for us was celebrating Leimomi Pope's (Robert's Mom) 90th birthday.

We'll keep you updated as the week progresses.

Grandies High School Award Ceremony

The Grand Hyatt knows how to really make its' associates feel special! Instead simply having an Associate Recognition Ceremony, they went all out to put on a skit, complete with the principal, Homecoming Queen & King, football players, cheer leaders, debate team, wood shop & chorus.

Robert was part of the wood shop portion of the skit (hence the plaid shirt I bought the day before because he didn't own one) and remembered all of his lines... ha-ha! We dressed up in the garb of our high school days, hence the long hair and outfit... And to top all of this off - a real marching band in the ball room after the skit. What a fun night!

All of this just goes to prove the point that if you take care of your associates, they will take care of your customers. (for those of you who have visited the Hyatt, you know what I am talking about!)

This weekend found Robert & I celebrating with our friends Jonathan & Angela at their housewarming party. We met them when their band Totally Savage was playing Crystals on the Square, and subsequently at local blues jams they hosted. We try to catch their performances whenever we can and they have also come out to support our guys, Premonition.

The Premonition guys joined in with Jonathan & Linda to break in the basement with a jam. A good time was had by all!

Watch out Mighty Mouse - there's a new drummer in town. ;-0

NOTE: This Saturday, January 27th will find Totally Savage playing at Crystal's on the Square, and Linda playing with Bob Margolin at Blind Willie's.

Weekend with Kenui & Makalani

This weekend was spent with good friends, music and food as usual. Friday night found us at Doc's dancing to the music of The Larry Griffith Band.

We couldn't get enough good music, so we continued on Saturday with Premonition practice. The music was great, food was plenty and conversation side splitting funny.

Sunday found me taking engagement pix of Sarah & Heath, as well as Kenui battling the mighty catfish that inhabit the lake in back of the house. (No worries, he is strictly a catch and release kind of guy.

that all of our friends and family came to the Langford Sound and Stage for a live recording/video session with our very own band, "Premonition"!

But you already knew that!

Robert and the guys, Bobby, John, Rick & Ryan, have been practicing every week and are ready to get out of the garage! Meet us at 4pm next Sunday, January 7th to get your New Year off to a great start! And to make this invitation even more enticing..... admission is FREE! This venue, Langford Sound and Stage, is conveniently located in Roswell and you can even find the directions on their site (link above).

Kids are welcome, but please remember the music will be pretty loud and also that this will be a live recording session. Refreshments are available in the lobby, as well as his and hers powder rooms. This place has it all - good friends, good music and good food!

BTW - I will have my camera ready to document this day in the chronicles of Premonition's humble beginnings....... Say cheese!

Pet Peeve

Here's a quick random rant. Unfortunately my pet peeve appears every day, but in a short two weeks I will not see it quite as frequently.

The apartment complex that we live in has handicap parking spaces sporadically placed throughout this sprawling set of parking lots. I am amazed and subsequently disgusted at the fact that seemingly able bodied persons with no handicap parking stickers consistently park in these spots, regardless of the availability of alternate spots.

The management staff is as poor about addressing this as some of the other on-going maintenance items. The on-site officer has, to the best of my knowledge, only issued one parking ticket to violators during the four and a half years we have been here.

Why will it end in two weeks? Not because people will change their ways, but that we are moving into a house! I'd love to make a set of signs to post during our last couple of weeks saying, "Your ignorance and inconsiderateness are handicaps - guess you should be parking here afterall!"

I can tell you from experience that none of the bad, or good for that matter, strokes of promised luck come true. (not that I don't make the wishes anyway)

So today, I get one this one that is really good and welcomed today. Soooo.... I am forwarding this to all of you! No threats of bad luck - just a wonderful message.

Random Musings

It's been awhile since we have updated y'all - not necessarily because we are so busy, but more so that we have been distracted.....

So as you may already know, both Robert and I have begun new jobs in the past couple of weeks. Robert got a promotion to Executive Sous Chef at the Grand Hyatt in Buckhead. Two weeks in and he likes it alot, but is working many extended hours. (Hmmm... guess that goes along with the territory) And guess what?! He has his very own 'assigned' parking spot!

And me, back at The Home Depot in the Learning Department. This position is very cool because of the direct contact I have with the field (aka stores). An important lesson learned through out this experience for me is to always be ready for the unexpected. The only thing constant is change.

"Uno-dos-tres-quatro-cinco!" is the latest word from Nathan, one of our three wonderful grandsons. Elijah is cooing and smiling more - and I have received promises of pix really soon! (I just may have to go to Florida to take them;-0)

Brayden, who is now five months old is taking swimming lessons! Is he a fish or just a Hawaiin baby?

Robert's family in Hawaii is fine after the earthquake, but it sure was a scary experience.

We'll be moving in a couple of weeks, and still have LOTS of packing to do...... Any and all offers to help are graciously being accepted! (just joking!)

I am hooked on HGTV and TLC! Yikes!

We had the opportunity to go out with our friends this weekend, and guess what?! That Indian seems to be following us around!

Did you know that you can get unlimited car (truck) washes for only $29.99 a month?! What a deal! I think we have the cleanest truck in town!

A Fabulous Find!

I am so excited I can hardly contain myself. In fact, a man stopped me today in the antique mall and said, you're smiling (mind you I was alone). I replied, "Yup, I just found a phenomenal place to get my camera repaired!"

For those of you who know me, you understand when I say that I am obsessed with 'capturing the moment.' I often stop to offer to take pictures for other people when I see one not able to 'be in the picture' because someone has to take it. They are usually quite appreciative once they realize that I am not trying to 'take' their camera. A couple of our friends have been telling me that I should get into the business of photography and they have a lead or two for me.

So....... that means that I really need to take action to get my camera fixed because it has a pesky couple of marks in every pix that has a light background, such as the sky or a white wall. I let my ESP (Extended Service Plan) lapse (that was $200 for one year), so I took my camera into Wolfe to see if they could fix it. The lady was so very nice and helpful. I showed her prints so that she could see exactly what I was talking about. She immediately said that the camera just needed to be cleaned and gave me the name of the shop to take it to. (the same one that provides the ESP service)

So..... I proceed to Peachtree Camera Repair shop, which btw is right near our place. The guy was so nice and indicated that they could have my camera and both lenses cleaned by 4pm the SAME DAY and that it will only cost $60. Yeah! I am so happy now!

I also mentioned that I have a Nikon N60, but that it probably isn't worth much right now. He told me about a camera show that will be taking place next weekend that I may be able to trade it in for another lense or accessory (I'm also thinking speed light)

He also told me about a group named Women in Focus who is comprised of both professional and amateur photographers. They meet once a month on the second Wednesday at the Emory Conference Center. I plan on attending the meeting this coming week to see what this is all about. If you check out their site, you will find some phenomenal photography. I can clearly see that I have so much to learn from them.

Introducing Mr. & Mrs. Pope......

It's official - we did it! This past Saturday, September 30th turned out to be a fabulous day. Robert (Kenui) and I (Makalani) arrived at the courthouse by 11:30am and by 11:40am Judge Jennifer Frey officially prounounced us husband and wife. It was such a beautiful moment as I looked into Kenui's eyes and professed my love for the man I will spend the rest of my life with.

Our weekend started on Friday with the arrival of our beautiful leis direct from Hawaii, a gift from Kenui's sister Kawehi and her family. The evening continued with dinner at one of our favorite local restaurants, Willie Rae's, then on to Crystal's on the Marietta Square to see Larry Griffith perform with Sal, Jack and Charlie Wooten.

After our ceremony we went to our favorite studio, Portrait Innovations, to capture our memories. You can see here what a fabulous job they do. (And as I mentioned in a previous post - they are very reasonable!)

Our friends Bobby and Cheryl hosted a wonderful dinner for us and some of our close friends in their home. A champagne toast, served in engraved flutes from Bobby and Cheryl started the evening off, followed by fabulous appetizers and dinner. Julie painted an beautiful original for our new home.

Anytime the guys, aka Premonition, are together, they can't resist playing a few tunes and this day was no exception.

Next on the agenda, we went with Bobby & Cheryl and Ryan to Crystal's on the Square to see another of our favorite bands, Totally Savage. And of course, the evening ended with the obligatory Indian picture!

Our suite at the Hyatt was gorgeous. Champagne and chocolate covered strawberries courtesy of the GM Peter made it even more special.

To top the weekend off, we went to the Jazz Brunch at the Renaissance Waverly. Great music, wonderful food and the man of my dreams - who could ask for more?

The Big Day is right around the corner......

and Robert and I couldn't be happier! The past month has been very interesting to say the least....... Continuing our previous 'Lemons' entry, we took a trip to the Cobb County Courthouse to obtain our marriage license. The very same window that you obtain a marriage license is also the one where 'firearms license' applications are submitted. Shotgun wedding anyone?

Completing the form in and of itself was an entertaining experience. It had two separate columns one for the groom and one for the bride, beginning with the expected full name, date of birth, city & state of birth, mother and father's full name. Here's where it gets interesting..... 'relationship', hmmmm...... what state are we in? You know we couldn't resist the Alabama jokes about marrying. But wait! What is the planned date of the marriage? Hmmmm.... we were very tempted to fill in two separate dates to see if the lady at the counter was on her toes - but she didn't seem very happy to even be there, so we decided to get married on the same day.

Now even you can get a bargain price for a marriage licenses in Georgia! Instead of paying the full price of $51, you can take a Qualified Premarital Education Program with at least six hours of instruction involving marital issues and pay a low, low $16!!! Now, Robert and I decided that if we have made it this far in life, and through three & a half years together with no fights - we can 'afford' to pay the full price.

So, you think this story is almost done? Not quite - the folks at the courthouse manage to make this a memorable experience before we ever get to the 'Big Day'. We ask where we can make an appointment to get married on September 30th, and the nice lady sends us across the way to the third floor judicial courtroom. We ask the lady at the window if we can make an appointment to get married, to which she replies, "Oh honey, you don't need no appointment! We do weddings twice a day at noon and at 6pm, seven days a week. Just get here 30 minutes early and you will be good to go!" Yikes - All I can picture is mass weddings done by the Reverend Moon!

Now.... on to Macy's to 'register'. The sales lady was very sweet, but really didn't acknowledge Robert until the very end of the process. It's almost as if he wasn't there. She would ask me a question, at which point I would turn to Robert to confer and she still didn't 'get it'. Finally - during choosing the pieces to complete our New Wave collection, Robert brings up the topic of presentation. Out of the blue she asks if he is a Chef, to which the obvious reply is yes. Whoaa there! Now this man is credible and worthy of her time. Funny how that works, huh?

OK, so now we have the license, are registered, hmmmm.... oh yes, we need flowers. For those of you who don't know - Robert is Hawaiin, so we decided to get traditional leis. Robert's sister Kawehi and her family are shipping the leis direct from Flowers For Mama in Hawaii.

When life hands you lemons.....

Last Wednesday started off as any normal work day, but it became evident very quickly that this was no ordinary day. My position was eliminated as The Home Depot continues its' efforts to remain profitable in today's highly competitive market. My initial reaction was that I had just been handed a bushel full of

I called Robert at work, and he decided to come home to help me figure out what the heck we should do with this bunch of lemons. What would happen if we squeezed the lemons?

Of course! You get lemonade! And that's what we did, we decided to take a day that started on a sour note, add sugar and there you go - lemonade. We are getting married!

Cheers! After three and a half years together - we decided to go for it.

And contemplating the future? Well, you never know.... I may just open up a lemonade stand! Seriously folks, this is the beginning of another chapter in my career and I am excited about the possibilities.

We ended the day at Turner Field - it was a good day afterall!

Portrait Innovations....

is perhaps one of the greatest finds we have made lately. When I told one of my co-workers about the need to have more portraits taken of the kids and grandsons, she suggested this studio to me. OMG!!! Quality, value and speed all wrapped up in one tidy package.

The portraits came out fabulous, the photographer was very patient with everyone from Brayden who needed a little break, to the adults (potentially me) who want to influence the outcome of the session. Even though the studio recommends bringing several changes of clothing to provide variety, we chose to do the very basic-blue jeans, white tees and bare feet to allow the focus to be on us rather than what we were wearing. (not that there is anything at all wrong with that - it just wasn't our intent with this session) They take on average 65 shots, then explain the process at a station with a huge monitor (which Robert and undoubtedly most guys go crazy over). The pricing is explained in detail and the running total is always visible on the screen (for those who are too shy or embarassed to ask). Once we decided on the package we wanted (8 poses) and a total of 4-10x13, 10-8x10, 32-5x7,4-3.5x5, and 32 wallet PLUS the actual CD - the pictures were printed within 30 minutes. Total price with tax? ~ $140!!!!

The Red Planet is about to be spectacular!

This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification

Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.
Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m.
and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.

By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.

Nathan simply loves his Tio Chris, who also just happens to be one of the best horsie rides in town. of Premonition was held right in front of my very favorite boutique ever, Alechemy this past Saturday afternoon. While it is true that Robert and I woke to the sound of thunder early that morning, the weather did clear up, making it the perfect day for an 'Al Fresco' performance.

Uncle Bob passed out 'Christmas in July' fans, while the guys played Jingle Bells in their Hawaiin shirts.

It was also Rick's birthday, so we had to ask the nearest Marilyn Monroe lookin' woman to serenade him!

The day was complete with dinner at Willie Rae's, one of our favorite eateries on the Square.

Another woman for Nathan?

Angela, Nathan's Mommy and main woman, is beginning to think that Nathan is seeing (or should I say watching) another woman. In the morning when Nathan used to want to climb in bed to cuddle, he now runs to the living room to watch Dora the Explorer. I even overheard him talking to her the other day while I was on the phone! "Buenos Dias Dora!", Nathan said very excitedly. As long as she continues to teach Nathan, Angela decided that she will not stand in the way of their relationship.

Lake County may soon have first seizure response dog

You might say Ken Livengood's life is going to the dogs.

Together with the community and Paws With A Cause, Livengood may soon be able to have Lake County's first seizure response dog to help his family better manage Livengood's epilepsy. Livengood said he realized he needed an assistance dog when his seizures became too much.

"After the last time I had staples put into my head, I looked at the wife and said, 'What do you think about helper dogs?' " Livengood said. "She'd already looked online."

Paws With A Cause and Munster's South Side Christian Church will hold a pancake breakfast June 24 to raise the remaining funds Livengood needs to purchase a dog. Tickets for the benefit are a $5 minimum donation.

"A lot of my clients say as their disability progresses, their world shrinks," field instructor Annie Schaffer said. "They can't work and then they can't drive, so their world just keeps shrinking."

"I think that's why Ken and his family chose Paws With A Cause," event coordinator Kelly Vates said. "Because of how much they invest in their dogs and their clients."

Livengood, now 47, learned of his epilepsy when he was 13. When Livengood had a seizure on the job in 1988, he was put on disability and later lost his driver's license. He is also required to wear a helmet while standing to prevent injury from unpredictable seizures. Vates said the dog would also help put Livengood's family at ease.

"A lot of these accidents happen when Ken is alone," Vates said. "The main goal with this dog is to be able to feel safe enough to leave home, go to work and feel confident that Ken's got someone right there by his side."

Schaffer said Livengood's dog would be trained specifically as a seizure response dog. When Livengood has a seizure, the dog will get a special cordless phone and bring it to Livengood. If Livengood has a seizure in public, the dog will lie down next to him to wait for help.

Paws With A Cause has placed more than 1,900 dogs with disabled clients nationwide. Clients must report on progress of the relationship every 18 months. If the client's condition changes, Schaffer said trainers come back and update the dog's skills to accommodate needs. Schaffer said the clients are screened almost as vigorously as the dogs.

When Livengood raises the money, his case will be placed on the "find a dog" list, where he can specify a size, gender or weight of his dog. Livengood said it was the dedication of staff and the thorough process that made him choose a dog from Paws.

"When Annie told me if I ran into a problem anytime and she said she could come back, that sold me," Livengood said.

"I think a key word for Paws With A Cause is 'responsibility,' " Vates said. "There are organizations that will place a dog with you for less money, but not with the quality Paws offers."
